![]() Destiny's calling... Confused? Don't be! Destiny is our new baker, based in BS4, Bristol. She is going to be baking and delivering cakes to you across Bristol, along with Mel and Louise. We caught up with her this weekend to find out a bit more about her love of baking. Hi Destiny - welcome to 280 Bakes! What's your favourite cake? Bread Pudding Who taught you to bake? My mum Did you enjoy cookery lessons at school? Absolutely loved them and very proud for my A in GCSE!! Who do you think will win The Bake Off this year? I would love Andrew to win but I think Candice will. What's the most interesting cake you've ever baked? It would be the Hawaii themed cake I did for my Dad's 65th. It was 3 wonky tiers each a different fruity flavour then covered in yellow, green and orange fondant and lots of Hawaiian sugar craft flowers. Thank you Destiny, and welcome to the team! The Team @ 280 Bakes That's our 'confused pondering' look too, Nadiya! Can anyone help with these Bake Off related questions for us? We'd love to know the answers! 1. Do they actually film only on weekends, or is the series made over a few weeks? 2. How do camera operators not get get in shot? The show is shot from the left of the tent, we get that, but there must be a degree of long-lensing for the contestants on the far side. How do the bakers know they're being films? 3. Which country house estate is this series at? They should totally use the fact they're the Bake Off tent location to attract more visitors! 4. Where do the ingredients come from? Is there a local Sainsbury's?! And finally... Who will be presenting next year on 'that other channel'?? ---- You know you always fancy a slice of cake or a munch on a brownie while watching the Bake Off... We can help! Place your orders for home made cake by Tuesday 6pm and we'll make sure it's with you in time for the final episode on Wednesday night. Name your cake! (Bristol, UK, only) The Team @ 280 Bakes
We, as we know you, have been glued to the Great British Bake Off, this year more than ever. Tissues at the ready - it will no longer be the same, alas, when it moves to Channel Four next year - without Mary, Mel and Sue!
Apart from the fact that the British public love tragedy in fanship of entertainment (Louis coming back to X Factor, Angus Deaton being replaced on Have I Got News For You etc.), it got us wondering why we love the institution of the Great British Bake Off. Bake Off is so real! These people are 'normals', pure 'muggles' on spectrum of TV cookery stars. They triumph sometimes, grimace often, fail occasionally, and cheer each other on unashamedly - and we love them for it! The Great British Bake Off makes it ok to cry about cake. It's emotional viewing. Louise, 280 Bakes owner, openly admits she 'yelped' during this year's semi-final! We challenge you to get through a whole final without a lump coming in your throat...
It's British and proud!
Everything from the language used, the jokes made, the contestants and the tension - so British! The show inspires us to improve our own baking and to try new recipes! What better result of the show for the cake-loving nation is that? It's so safe! You can watch it with your gran or your grandchild. Some of the bakes may be a little... suggestive... (see Andrew's 'rude' bake from last week!), but even the strongest euphemism will go over the wrong person's head. No one is humiliated or made cruel comments at, and it's still entertaining *sarcastic shock*. Everyone wants Mary Berry for a Nan! Good luck to you, Channel 4, you have some seriously big cake tins to fill. The team @ 280 Bakes We bakers are welcoming in Winter: We have put away our summer clothes and pulled out our gorgeous woollen sweaters, hats and gloves - and we've created a new cake menu for the season to celebrate! Give our new Winter cake menu a spell in the microwave before enjoying the taste - they'll warm you from the inside, out. While you're online right now, why not pop over to our Twitter page and have a look at the wintery chat at #winterwarmers? November is just a week or so away - take comfort in our Winter Warmers cake menu, and we'll take the chill out of the season. Stay warm, The Team @ 280 Bakes Bristol has been kind to us: A base for our start-up, wonderful customers, a popular vegan haunt, and, more than anything, some wonderful connections. I'd like to introduce a local business who's been more than wonderful to us in the last few months - Elsa Rose Boutique.
Elsa Rose Boutique, named for the owner's (Sarah) grandmother, is a unique wedding craft business based in Weston-Super-Mare. Gentle handed geniuses at Elsa Rose Boutique create bespoke, beautiful broaches, buttonholes, hair accessories, all handmade - and for us, they make wedding couple toppers, personalised to the couple in question. I've seen a couple in dive suits, lovers in wedding dress with a pet cat at their feet, a couple of superhero fans - and many more. Take a look at a few of the fabulous models of couples Sarah made for some recent 280 Bakes wedding cakes. We know some weddings can be very similar to each other, but no wedding cake will ever be the same as one with a model from Sarah standing proudly on the top. ![]() We'd like to introduce Melanie to you - she is our newest baker in the team! A mum of two, from Downend in Bristol, Melanie has been baking for a long time. She wowed us when she baked our Fairtrade banana loaf last week, and the deal was sealed. She'll be baking and delivering shortly, so don't be surprised to see a new face! Melanie says "Banana cake is one of my favourite cakes to make - the kids love it! - so I was really pleased I was asked to bake that for my 280 Bakes interview. I look forward to a lot more baking!" Welcome, Melanie - we look forward to baking with you! The Team @ 280 Bakes Seats for Startups: A business competition for startup companies in the south-west of England. The prize was a plane ticket from Bristol Airport to anywhere BMI fly, the winner having explained their business and how a trip to Europe would aid their business's development and profits. A dream prize. Our first business competition. Well, reader... we won!!!
Our business plan was explained to BMI and they loved it. The team also believed in our desire to visit Bern, Switzerland to see a cake franchise business in action. So, on 13th December, 280 Bakes will be heading off on our first international business trip! We're off to see Cupcake Affair, and to explore the city's other bakeries - and we can't wait! Stay tuned for our adventures, as 280 Bakes takes on Switzerland! The Team @ 280 Bakes ![]() You know we love linking with local businesses through cake - here's our latest cake-venture! Moor Beer, based near Bristol's Temple Meads train station, were established in 1996. They produce exceptional characters in their beers, and the awards they've won reflect that (e.g. regular CAMRA awards). Now, they've invited us to bake a cake using a brand new pale ale, set to be released to tap this weekend. The latest beer coming from the Moor team is called HYPERCAFFIUM SPAZZINATE, a 6% pale ale made with cascara coffee berries. The beer is named in tribute to the latest album by The Descendents, one of the original So-Cal Hardcore Punk bands. We'll be using Hypercaffium Spazzinate in a brand new cake recipe created for the beer's launch party, a spiced boozy bake, with a sweet after-taste. Using the cascara beans, we're learning to infuse coffee beans with honey, coffee, and chocolate, to name a few. The release party will have food from the fabulous Feastie Boys, and the latest brew of Dark Alliance, another fab brew from Moor Beer, a 4.5% coffee stout. We can't think of a better plan for this Saturday night! To find out more about this exciting launch event, visit the brewery's Facebook events page. And our cake - you can see it right here, but you'll have to go to Moor Beer's event to try this exclusive! All the best to Justin and his team - we hope your Hypercaffium Spazzinate is a huge success and you love the cake. Special thanks to Darran at Moors, who has been key to us working with Moor Beer.
